Green Smoothies for a Healthier Life
Monday 04/20/2020We are all trying to be the healthiest version of ourselves, especially during these strange times! One of the best, easiest ways to dramatically up your healthy eating game is by adding green smoothies to your day.
We all know that we should be eating more fruits and vegetables. It is recommended that we consume 3 cups of leafy greens and a cup of fruit every day. A healthy green smoothie has 100% of your vitamins A, C, and K as well as many B vitamins. It has tons of fiber and antioxidants and is also a good source of minerals such as magnesium, iron, and calcium. Add 1/2 an avocado for a dose of healthy fat (and to help your body absorb all those great vitamins and minerals) and a scoop of protein powder, and you’ve got an easy, healthy, filling breakfast or lunch.
A great beginner green smoothie recipe calls for a 1:1:1 ratio of greens, fruit, and liquid. For example, start with 2 cups of water or almond milk, add a few big handfuls of spinach (very mild and a good green to start with), and 1 cup of frozen berries and 1/2 banana and a small scoop of nut butter. Blend with ice and you’ve got a delicious breakfast or mid morning snack!
Once you get going, you can start playing with the ingredients. Ease back on the amount of fruit to decrease sugar, and add 1/2 an avocado for the healthy fat and the great smoothness. Try adding in other greens like kale, chard, mild micro greens, and collards. Add in a vegan protein powder. Add a slice of turmeric or ginger to up the immunity benefits. Add a small amount of beet powder for healthy blood - I swear you cant taste it! The possibilities are endless!
Lately, I've been focusing on reducing my sugar intake and keeping my immune system as strong as possible, so my smoothie looks like this:
- 1 cup of water
- 2 big handfuls of a variety of greens
- 1/2 small carrot
- 1 stick of celery
- 1/2 scoop of vanilla vegan protein (Helpful tip: try a few different protein powders and find one you like best. It makes a huge difference in the flavor of your smoothie! I love Vega Protein Powder (Vanilla).
- 1 scoop of collagen powder
- 1 tsp of beet root powder
- 1/2 avocado
- Blend with a bunch of ice (Helpful tip: although you can use any blender to make a smoothie, I would highly recommend getting the best one you can afford. I have a Blendtec and LOVE it.)
Also, try your hardest to buy organic…it's so much healthier!
