Is Your Thyroid Whispering (or Yelling) For Attention?

Your thyroid may be small, but it has a BIG job! This butterfly-shaped gland helps regulate every system in your body, including metabolism, energy, mood, weight, heart rate, and even your body temperature. When your thyroid is out of balance, your whole body feels it.

Thyroid dysfunction is often thought of as either sluggish (hypothyroid), which is most common, or overactive (hyperthyroid). Many people live with thyroid issues for years before they are recognized.

In this month’s newsletter, we will go over common signs and causes of thyroid dysfunction and highlight certain recommendations to help your thyroid function optimally and for you to feel your best!

Common Signs of a Sluggish Thyroid

  • Ongoing fatigue
  • Hair thinning
  • Feeling cold frequently
  • Dry skin
  • Mood changes (anxiety or depression)
  • Constipation
  • Irregular cycles or fertility issues

Plus so much more. Remember sluggish thyroid, sluggish everything!

Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Thyroid disorders affect millions, especially women, and often go underdiagnosed for years.

Why Thyroid Issues Are So Often Missed

Your standard lab results—checking TSH and/or free T4—often don’t reflect the full picture. You might be told your thyroid is “normal,” yet continue to suffer from symptoms. This is because the “normal” range is extremely broad. The reality is that thyroid health is determined not by a single number, but by how your body is truly functioning. Here at Optimal Bio, we obtain an extensive thyroid panel that gives a more complete picture of how your thyroid is performing.

Common Root Causes of Thyroid Dysfunction

  • Autoimmunity (most common): Hashimoto’s disease and Graves disease are autoimmune conditions in which the immune system mistakenly attacks thyroid tissue. This is often driven by gut dysfunction, stress, and nutrient deficiencies
  • Gut Health: Poor gut function can lead to dysbiosis and leaky gut, causing more inflammation in your body that can trigger autoimmune disease
  • Chronic Stress: Prolonged stress disrupts hormone production and weakens immune balance
  • Nutrient Deficiencies: Key nutrients (selenium, zinc, iodine, iron, vitamin D) are essential for thyroid hormone production
  • Blood Sugar Imbalance: Blood sugars wings increase inflammation and interfere with thyroid signaling
  • Environmental toxins: Heavy metals, plastics, pesticides, and halogens can impair thyroid function
  • Infections & Immune Triggers: Chronic infections can initiate or worsen autoimmune thyroid disease
  • Hormone Imbalance: Common in perimenopause and menopause. Estrogen dominance affects thyroid binding proteins and how much active thyroid hormone reaches tissues

Ways To Support A Healthy Thyroid

  1. Ensure adequate nutrients: iodine, selenium, zinc, iron, vitamin d, B vitamins, and omega-3 fats
  2. Manage stress with daily practices such as breath work, meditation, light movement, or time outdoors
  3. Support gut health with rich fiber foods, probiotics or fermented foods, and minimal ultra-processed foods
  4. Prioritize sleep (7-9 hours nightly) and keep a consistent sleep-wake schedule
