Building and Boosting Our Immune Systems
Thursday 12/28/2023

Although there are a number of reasons why Americans are more unhealthy than ever, some of the main ones involve poor diets, lack of exercise, and weak immune systems. The immune system is made up of organs, cells, and proteins that all work together to protect your body from bacteria and infection.

There are two main parts of the immune system that work together. The innate immune system is what we are born with and the adaptive immune system is what we develop overtime as our body is exposed to different microbes and chemicals. The adaptive immune system makes antibodies to protect our bodies from different invaders. If your immune system is working properly, it will be able to accurately tell which cells are yours and which are foreign to your body; furthermore, if it recognizes these invaders, it will attack and kill the germs that can cause harm. On the flip side of things, if your immune system is not working properly it will not be able to successfully attack the germs. This leads to problems, such as an infection, occurring.

Your immune system is made up of different cells and organs that work together to protect you from germs and help you recover after being sick. Some of the main parts of the immune system are below:

  • White blood cells: Think of white blood cells as being the army against any harmful bacteria. They search for and attack germs in order to keep you healthy.
  • Lymph nodes: Lymph nodes are glands that work to filter and destroy any germs before they spread to other parts of your body. They contain cells that analyze the foreign cells that enter your body and send white blood cells to fight off the invaders.
  • Spleen: Your spleen is where all of your white blood cells are stored.
  • Skin: Your skin is the first line of defense before germs enter your body. It produces oils and secretes other protective immune system cells. Germs are also destroyed by different enzymes found in sweat, tears, saliva, and mucus membranes.

It takes a diligent effort to build up a strong immune system, and one of our favorite things to advise patients to do is incorporate supplements into their daily routines. Mainly, everyone should be taking Vitamin D. Having peak levels of Vitamin D is one of the best things you can do to boost your immune system. Along with Vitamin D, incorporating Vitamin C and Zinc into your diet are great ways to boost immunity. Apart from supplements, we cannot stress enough how important it is to get plenty of sleep, stay active, eat healthy foods, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce stress. Practicing all of these habits will help create a well-working immune system and keep you healthy all year long!
