The Importance of Hormones to Cardiovascular Health

Most of us know that diet, exercise, and stress levels are all factors that contribute to cardiovascular health. What many fail to consider is the importance of hormones to our hearts. From regulating blood pressure and heart rate to modulating stress response and metabolism, hormones play a crucial role in ensuring the heart's proper function. 


Hormones and The Heart

Key sex hormones testosterone and estrogen play their own roles in the cardiovascular system. When these fall out of balance, whether it be through aging, menopause, or a health condition, it can disrupt important cardiovascular functions. 

Testosterone is essential to maintaining a healthy heart as optimal levels can help reduce heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes in both men and women. This hormone plays a crucial role in maintaining cardiac function, regulating blood pressure, and preserving vascular integrity. Imbalances in testosterone levels can increase cardiovascular risk. Scientific research has shown an association between a decrease in testosterone levels and an overall increase in cardiovascular risk. 

Estrogen also plays a crucial role in this complex system by helping to maintain healthy blood vessel function, reducing inflammation, and promoting vasodilation, which can lower blood pressure and improve circulation. Additionally, estrogen helps regulate cholesterol levels by increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and decreasing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, contributing to a reduced risk of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. Like testosterone, declining levels of estrogen can pose a great risk to cardiovascular health.


Cardiovascular Disease is the #1 Killer of Women

Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer in women? An article by Howard N. Hodis, MD and Wendy J. Mack, PhD states that cardiovascular disease causes 1 in 3.2 deaths in women each year in the US. Increased cardiovascular risk in women as they age is primarily due to the decline in estrogen levels, which is further exacerbated by menopause. With the onset of menopause and the decrease in estrogen production, women become more susceptible to conditions such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and heart disease. 


Keeping Our Hormones & Heart Healthy

So, how do we ensure our hormones are at an optimal level for cardiovascular health? We can start with my key wellness habits: eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and reduce stress levels. In addition to this lifestyle, it is extremely important to replenish what we’ve lost. 

As we age, we lose these essential hormones that promote our bodily and cardiovascular functions. This is why I stress the importance of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) to restore optimal hormone levels. Unlike synthetic hormone treatments, bioidentical hormone pellets are identical to the hormones our bodies naturally produce.
