Heal Your Gut, Boost Your Immunity
Are you someone that, despite a healthy lifestyle, still finds yourself battling frequent colds, feeling sluggish, or dealing with unexplained allergies? You might be overlooking this crucial aspect of your health… In this month’s newsletter, we are going to dive into the role gut health plays in our immunity.
The truth about the gut microbiome’s impact on immunity:
Prioritizing a healthy gut flora is crucial for our immune system, which resides primarily in our gut. Unfortunately, our modern diets, filled with processed foods and high-stress environments, are silently disrupting our gut’s delicate ecosystem and negatively impacting our immune system.
Your immune system is made up of four teams:
- The organs that produce armies of white blood cells
- Lymphatic systems that circulate those troops
- Antigens and antibodies your system makes after taking on viruses and other threats
- Your gut microbiome, which scientists are continuing to find plays a critical role in immunity
Your gut microbiome is the community of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms living within your digestive tract. They not only break down food into nourishment but also send warning signals to our body’s immune system when they sense danger.
This intimate connection between your gut health and immune responses means that when one suffers, the other does too. Vice versa, when your immune system is healthy and your gut microbiome is diverse and flourishing, homeostasis is maintained.
Some gut bacteria, known as Bacteroidetes, are vital because they tell your immune cells when to spring into action and when to relax. This helps prevent too much inflammation and keeps your body from attacking things it shouldn’t… like your own cells.
The takeaway: By nurturing your gut microbiome, you’re directly improving your immune defenses—allowing you to enjoy a life with fewer sick days and more energy!
Here are some easy ways to amplify your gut microbiome to support your immune system:
- Don’t remove all foods in the name of gut health – this starves out the good bugs and weakens the immune system! Focus on including more foods, not excluding.
- Add one new veggie each week. Get creative—this helps increase diversity and feed the “good guys.”
- Increase fiber intake. Aim for 25–38g of fiber a day to promote a healthy gut microbiome.
- Stay hydrated. Proper hydration aids digestion and prevents constipation.
- Eat gut-healthy foods. Focus on whole, unprocessed foods like fruit, veggies, and fermented foods (yogurt, kimchi).
- Sip on bone broth. Its collagen, gelatin, and amino acids support digestion, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the intestinal barrier.
- Manage stress. Stress can alter gut permeability and immune function, disrupting the balance of beneficial bacteria.
- Exercise regularly. Movement improves nutrient metabolism, immune function, and inflammatory balance.
Foods to Support Both Immune and Gut Health:
- Anti-inflammatory foods: Fatty fish (salmon), ginger, nuts (almonds), seeds, and berries (blueberries) help reduce inflammation, benefiting both gut and immune health.
- Prebiotic foods: Garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus, and bananas nourish beneficial gut bacteria and foster a healthy gut environment.
- Probiotic-rich foods: Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi can enhance gut bacteria and promote immune health.
- Broccoli: A nutritional powerhouse, thanks to sulforaphane—a unique phytochemical with potent anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects.
- Olive oil: Especially extra virgin, is a cornerstone of anti-inflammatory diets. Its compound oleocanthal directly inhibits inflammatory enzymes, reducing gut and systemic inflammation.
- Garlic: Garlic boosts immune function, thanks to its bioactive compound allicin. Released when garlic is chopped or crushed, allicin enhances immune cell activity and reduces gut inflammation by inhibiting harmful bacteria while supporting beneficial microbes.
Having a healthy gut is not about completely revamping your life—it’s about adding one small change at a time.
Start by adding more diversity to your plate this week. Think about one vegetable you haven’t had in the past month and bring it back to your plate! Once you’re in a good rhythm there, move on to other areas like movement, stress management, and beyond.
