5 Ways to Build Real Energy (That Don’t Come From Caffeine)
Feeling low energy is one of the top reasons patients seek our help at Optimal Bio. While low testosterone is a very common cause of feeling exhausted all the time, we want to dive into other ways to boost energy naturally. This month’s newsletter will be all about ways to enhance your BHRT and optimize your life (and energy levels) even more!
We hear it all the time, “I need caffeine to function, and more caffeine to survive the afternoon slump.” But guess what? Your body isn’t lacking coffee. It is lacking energy production support. Caffeine doesn’t create energy. It actually blocks adenosine (the chemical that makes you feel tired), which temporarily masks fatigue. So if you are constantly feeling tired, your body is asking for something deeper, and we need to listen!
Here are five real ways to build sustainable energy – without another cup of joe.
1. Stabilize Blood Sugar
Energy crashes often happen due to unstable blood sugar. When we eat too many carbohydrates, and not enough protein, fiber, and healthy fats, our blood sugar spikes and then comes crashing down again – this rollercoaster ride leads to us feeling fatigued, irritable and “hangry.” The only thing that often helps are more carbohydrates to bring blood sugar back up, but it is a quick fix as we know what goes up, must come down…again. Ideally, we would have stabilized blood sugar and energy levels all day long! Here are some ways to achieve this:
- Start your day with 25-35g of protein (eggs, cottage cheese, turkey, chicken sausage, good quality protein powder, Greek yogurt, ground beef, etc.)
- Always add healthy fats to your meals (avocado, olive oil, nuts/seeds, Ghee, etc.)
- Do not skip out on fiber! Fiber slows stomach emptying, slows digestion of carbs, and slows glucose entering the bloodstream – especially soluble fiber (as it forms a gel-like substance in your gut) – thus making it one of the most powerful (and underrated) tools for blood sugar balance. Think chia seeds, flax seeds, oats, lentils, beans, and psyllium husk!
- Avoid starting with coffee on an empty stomach or high-sugar/low-quality foods (e.g., pastries, cereal, pancakes, bagels)
2. Support Mitochondria
The “energy factories” of your cells. If you are constantly depleted, under-eating, or chronically stressed, your energy production will suffer. Mitochondria need:
- B vitamins – they act as cofactors, meaning they help turn food into cellular energy.
- Magnesium – ATP (energy molecule) does not work without magnesium. If mitochondria are the power plants, magnesium is the stabilizer that lets the energy currency function.
- Iron (if low) – Iron carries oxygen to the mitochondria; so, less iron = less oxygen delivery = less energy production. Even before anemia develops, low ferritin levels can reduce exercise tolerance and cognitive energy!
- Adequate protein – mitochondria are built from protein. Without enough dietary amino acids, your body cannot repair damaged mitochondrial proteins or build new ones, and energy output will decline over time.
3. Ensure Morning Sunlight + Movement
Getting outside for 5-10 minutes of light exposure within 30 minutes of waking anchors your circadian rhythm and improves daytime alertness – naturally. Additionally, movement is one of the most powerful ways to increase energy production because it directly stimulates your mitochondria to become more numerous, more efficient and more resilient.
4. Hydrate
And much more than you think! Even mild dehydration can cause: brain fog, fatigue, and headaches. Before drinking your morning coffee, give 16-20oz of water a try with a pinch of sea salt or electrolytes.
5. Check Your Stress Load
Chronic stress = elevated cortisol = eventual burnout. Here are some signs your fatigue may be stress-related:
- Wired but tired feeling
- Afternoon crashes
- 3 am wakeups
- Dependence on caffeine
Sometimes energy isn’t about doing more. It is about recovering optimally.
If you are constantly running on caffeine, skipping meals, sleeping poorly, “pushing through,” not getting outside, sedentary most of the day, and you are feeling exhausted all the time. Your body isn’t broken; it is under-supported. True energy comes from nourishment, rest, minerals, stabilized blood sugar, lower stress, movement, and sunlight. Not another espresso.
